Nisqually Lodge Legend

Many moons ago while the mountains where still young, three powerful spirits roamed and served the lands surrounding the great body of water, now called Puget Sound. Tahoma, the strong Bear, dwelt in the North. The mighty Thunderbird, Tillicum, soared across the Southern skies. Kcum kum, the endearing Salmon, flourished in the West.

For many years the three spirits had strong tribes and great leaders. Each tribe gave themselves to cheerful service, working hard to serve those around them. Their lands were prosperous, full of happiness. Yet always nearby darkness crept closer, it was the darkness that sought to extinguish the fire of Cheerfulness from each tribe. The people looked to their Chiefs and the three spirits for guidance. In the darkness they stood listening. If they were to overcome the darkness which threatened to eclipse their fire of cheerfulness they would have to stand together. So the great and mighty Chieftains called their tribes together. In the lush forest of the Nisqually Valley the three tribes met. Together they renewed their pledge to cheerful service and agreed to work with one another. The three spirits taking note of their devotion transformed into one. Kcum kum, the eldest of these spirits, became the body. Tahoma gave the body wings. Tillicum completed the transformation by becoming the tail. So the great Raven spirit was formed in the lush valley of the Nisqually River.

Ten years have past since that transformation took place. The Raven spirit and its tribe grow strongly throughout the lands. From the great mountain in the East to the mighty ocean in the West those to this day succeeding perpetuate the spirit of cheerful service. Thusly does our fire of Cheerfulness still glow brightly against the darkness that abounds.
